Happy 4th of July !
Yesterday, Emily (L), Sue (center), Rachel (R), and Jo (hiding from the camera) opened all the packages that have arrived to date for Aschiana. The in-flow of wool socks, mittens, and hats is starting to pick up. Gorgeous workmanship! Lovely items galore. Thank you! Please keep it coming and spread the word.
What are the ladies holding?
Emily has mittens and socks knit by Renee, the moderator of the afghans for Afghans' friends group on Ravelry. In the middle, Sue has items knit by Jean from Maine (they understand cold and wool!), a long-time volunteer and terrific online enthusiast for the project. On the right is Rachel with a4a blog moderator Elizabeth's popular 4-needle mittens (see pattern link here).
Jo came all the way from Fremont, via BART, to help out. This was the first time we met Sue, and hope she'll join us again. Emily and Rachel have been indispensable to the packing team for a long time. So appreciative of their taking time from their own busy schedules to help out.
We got into sizing the hats with our styrofoam wig heads or even our own noggins. Hats have to cover ears and be solidly sew at the top (the dominate variety). While we don't have to worry about armscye, torso, or sleeve lengths for this campaign, we're making sure all the socks, mittens, and hats are in fine form for their recipients. No one would want to be the kid or adult who gets a poorly made gift for the winter, especially with few or no possessions. So, this is what we have in mind when we open the packages. We're serious about the task at hand, but our Basement crew is great company -- and we love seeing gazillion examples of patterns and yarns and always leave tired and uplifted by the generosity and talent of all the contributors. A reason for fireworks, for sure!
In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, we went with American Hershey's.

a4A volunteers have formed Ravelympic teams in past years. And, how about this 2008 photo of long-time, devoted (and fun) volunteers Ellen, Sarah, Judith, and Keiko at Stash in Berkeley!
Stash is sadly gone. However, the 4 of you under those rings might have put you at risk! Your defense could have been that this was for the good of The Cause.

This and That
A small collection ready to go. I'm also using stash yarn, but I miss knitting the sweaters. Actually I have 4 of my own sweater projects waiting in the wings. Since July is our deadline this year, maybe several of these will get finished. Just started another hat and then anything else I can accomplish before the final date.

May was for Mittens
The new campaign is just perfect for a knitter saddled with too many orphan skeins; I have been playing match-maker, combining one strand of mohair (or in the case of the pink mittens on the left, angora) with a smoother wool and turning those various combos into mittens. When I don't have enough yarn leftover to make another pair, I use it up in a hat. Elizabeth's wonderful mitten pattern is by now engraved in my brain; I dropped these off in the AFSC basement this week, but I have a few more items in various stages of progress: another pair of mittens, another hat, and a pair of socks. It feels so good to turn my neglected stash wools into warm and cozy pieces of knitwear. I am going away on vacation soon and plan to focus on more socks. Stay tuned!

Monday Mitten Mailing
These mittens will head west to San Francisco on Monday:
From the top down: Lopi, Takhi (have to find the ball band), Brown Sheep Bulky green, Brown Sheep Bulky red, Brown Sheep Bulky purple, Lion Brand Fisherman's wool held double, Elann Peruvian Highland Wool held double, and a discontinued Knitpicks Wool of the Andes held double. All except pair #2 were made following this pattern, using the instructions that start with you casting on 28 stitches. Use whatever needles work for you with bulky weight yarn -- I used 7s (4.5 mm) or 8s (5.0 mm), but most people would prefer a 10 (6.0 mm) or a 10.5 (7.0 mm) -- I knit very loosely.
There is still plenty of time to make a pair for this campaign. I know it's getting hot outside, but mittens don't sit on your lap, so they're not too bad for summer knitting, and think how good it will feel next winter to know you've made some kid in miserable circumstances just that tiny bit less miserable.

Hi, I'd like to introduce myself. I am a Labor and Delivery nurse in Manhattan and I live in New Jersey. I've spent most of my career working with women and children. I have been following this blog for some time but I have never posted before. In my spare time I love to spin, and I work mostly with wool and alpaca. In 2008, my son was deployed to Afghanistan and he talked about the bitter cold and the need for warm clothing for the children, so aforA seemed like a perfect match for me. I have been happily knitting for the cause ever since. I've been blown away by the beauty and the creativity of some of the items created by the contributors to this blog. You inspire me!

Charming mittens or no?
The charm of Noro Kureyon is the unpredictable color changes but do you think these mittens will find a home if I send them in? The blue tips are actually from a different skein. I have knitting fans at home who would take these if you think the green/grey and green/gold combos kind of break the unity that one might expect with mittens.

Hats!
I posted these pictures on the A4A group on ravelry already, but thought I'd add them here. I've completed 5 hats, most of which fit my rather large adult sized head, so it should fit most people. :) I was able to use up some old skeins, which was great. I like this new campaign because of the smaller items (though I do have a sweater completed and am waiting for the next campaign that requires sweaters). Not the greatest pictures, but they do look better in person than on pictures.
