Is this Stitch Too Open?

Here's the stitch I learned to crochet with help from Pearl & Sue. (Thanks again!) Is it too open? I tried another sample with a smaller hook. I'll try to post that too if I can. (My 'puter's in the shop and I'm borrowing the hubby's laptop.)

I put it on a piece of notebook paper to give you and idea of the size.

What do you think? Too open? Start over? Use two strands?
