I think i remember a discussion about the weight of socks but i need a reminder. I have some donated lopi in my stash and I have time to knit a pair to stick in my package. They would be pretty thick of course but extra dense and sturdy. Is there such a thing as socks that are too heavy?

Thanks,
Cindy

The experts from the basement can give you a definitive answer, but it seems to me that as long as the socks are not knit too tight as to be inflexible, they should be fine. I understand a lot of the kids wear these with sandals, and without shoes of any kind inside.

Hi, Cindy -- I love Lopi, and I know that Dawn Brocco, a designer I respect a great deal, has used it for socks. I wouldn't choose it, though, for a couple of reasons: (1) even my feet, which don't complain about most wool, find Lopi kind of to very itchy; (2) it's loosely spun and tends to be knit to a looser gauge, making it more susceptible to wearing out when it's used for socks; and (3) for a lot of the kids, this will be their only pair of socks, so it's better to use a yarn that will make socks they can wear with shoes. Lopi does make admirable mittens, though, and they're even faster than socks. . .
